The BPRC Race Programme for 2009

The BPRC intends to grow during 2009 by concentrating on long distance offshore races. With this in mind we are putting in place two new long distance offshore races for the coming year. The full programme has yet to be agreed with the RYA but will be as follows.

May 2009* Poole - Cherbourg – Poole Challenge.
June 2009* 1,100 mile 6 day race in the Mediterranean.
August 2009* Cowes Torquay Cowes / Cowes Classic.
New rules are being designed as we speak and will be in place very shortly. These will hopefully be the basis for all National & International “Marathon” offshore racing for the next 3 to 4 years.

They are being designed for the future and to ensure safety for crews. Boats will have to be well built to withstand the stresses of long distance offshore racing over long periods and the rules will reflect this.

There will be no room for lightweight overpowered boats. Engine and boat manufacturers will be able to plan for the future and know that the rules will not be changed on an annual basis. Racers will be able to make better and more definitive decisions on their choice of boat and engine combinations. This should quickly lead to greater and fiercer competition on the open seas.

*Dates to be confirmed.

With this years great races, the highly successful Round Britain Race and the re-emergence of the famous Cowes Torquay Cowes Race has sparked considerable new interest from some of the other well known clubs. We hope to see the famous old “Needles Trophy” being run again by the Royal Motor Yacht Club of Poole in July and there appears to be another long distance race being planned to run out of Poole in September of 2009 by U.K.O.B.A.

This is all great news for those of you wanting to take part in serious offshore races. Great Britain is leading the way and lets hope that other countries in Europe will soon take note and understand that true offshore powerboat racing is back and join us in running similar events so that some of the other Great Races of the past such as the Venice to Monte Carlo will emerge once again.
